Visiting Ripon

Ripon may be a little city, but it packs a big punch. For history lovers

With a richly-preserved history stretching back to the 700s, Ripon is a treasure trove if you want a window into Anglo-Saxon life. The absolute must-see spot of Ripon is undoubtedly Fountains Abbey, which is perhaps one of Yorkshire’s most famous sites.

Nestled into acres of glorious parkland where deer roam free, the ruined Fountains Abbey is a spectacle for even the most travelled tourist. Wander the magnificent arches, marvel at the seasonal installations in the Water Gardens, and spot filming locations from your favourite TV shows and films.

If you’d prefer to stay in the city centre, make sure to check out Ripon Cathedral, which is the oldest cathedral in the UK still used today. You won’t be able to miss it – the majestic dual towers dominate the skyline visible from the nearby rolling hills.

If you want to truly appreciate the splendour of Ripon Cathedral, make sure you visit when there’s a special event on. Kids can scream themselves silly on a day trip to Lightwater Valley Theme Park! Only a few miles out from Ripon, this haven for white-knuckle youngsters is packed full of rides and attractions to wear out even the most sugar-loving child. Big kids can shoot down the mighty Splash Falls flume, swing into the sky on the Flying Cutlass pirate ship, or spin until they’re dizzy on the Thunderdome. But not to fear, there’s plenty of fun for toddlers, too – with pint-sized rides and an extensive network of outdoor play area spots.

Or if you’re looking for a quieter day out, Piglets Adventure Farm Park is a great destination for families seeking fun without so much adrenaline. Kids can meet farmyard friends like goats, donkeys and, of course, pigs – with opportunities to meet the piglets! Plus, there’s plenty of playpark activities to keep kids busy, with Bouncing Pillows, a Mini Golf course, and even a Fairy Tale Trail to spot the places in the park where the fairies are living.

Food & Drink

The fabulous countryside surrounding Ripon is ideal for a dedicated picnic for lunch on one day of your Yorkshire holiday. But if you fancy staying local for your grub, there’s plenty of places to find a great lunch in the city centre.
