Conwy is a thriving market town surrounded by gorgeous Welsh countryside and the amazing coast. The area is surrounded by history, and you will be spoilt for choice by the vast array of attractions on offer.
Exploring the town
The magnificent and incredibly well-preserved Conwy Castle is an unmissable landmark. This is a stunning example of 13th Century architecture, which can be explored up-close via its indoor staircases, which are still in perfect condition for use. The castle is the focal point of the town, which is clear to see when appreciating the view of the surrounding area from its impressive battlements.
1.2km of historical walls encompass the town and along them are amazing battlements and towers. Their route leads around the whole town, providing the ideal circular walk to explore the area. Follow the walls to the quayside where you can spot the boats travelling in and out of the area. Boat trips around the estuary and coastline can be booked here.
Another iconic piece of Conwy’s history is The Smallest House in Great Britain. Despite its size, it is easily spotted by its vibrant red colour. This tiny residence is only 1.8m wide and is definitely a must-see feature due to its unique and quirky qualities.
For a stroll through nature, or a more adventurous hike, visit Pensychnant nature reserve. Miles of unspoiled countryside are waiting to be explored, as well as birdlife and polecats which you will find amongst the trees. A Victorian estate is also nestled amongst the greenery, where there are guided tours available of its cosy interior.
There are a wide range of eateries in Conwy, so you are guaranteed to find one suited to your taste. L’s Coffee and Bookshop is a comfortable-feeling spot to enjoy a coffee and a cake with a new book. The Jester’s Tower serves locally roasted coffee, supplemented with a beautiful estuary view. When visiting the castle, Castle Gallery is just outside for a coffee pit-stop.
In the evening, Lava Kitchen serves steak on the stone so that it can be cooked exactly to your tastes. Watson’s Bistro is a family-run business which prides itself on providing the best food experiences for its guests, the meals being served using fresh local produce. A traditional fish and chips can also be enjoyed at The Galleon in town.
Nearby locations
Not far away is the popular coastal town of Llandudno, where there are many shopping opportunities as well as a golden sandy beach to walk along. Here, visit the picturesque Victorian Pier, where there are traditional seaside novelties such as arcade games and sweet stands. There is also a bar at the end for drinks in the evening overlooking the sea. A fascinating experience is guaranteed via a guided tour around the Great Orme Mines, which are prehistoric copper mines a half-an-hour walk away from the centre.
Snowdonia National Park is easily accessible from Conwy, and this area of natural beauty is the perfect place for those wanting some hiking experience with incredible mountain views. More daring people can even climb up Mount Snowdon. The various routes are guaranteed to give breath-taking panoramas of lakes and reservoirs located throughout the reserve. Look out for Yr Ysgwrn, a rustic cottage which was previously home to a Welsh poet.
A 15-minute drive away is Bodnant Gardens, a National Trust property with lush gardens featuring a variety of plants collected over several centuries from across the world. There is a vintage-style tearoom where you can enjoy an afternoon tea or a light lunch, or alternatively pick up a takeaway coffee from the riverside kiosk.
Unique experiences
There is no shortage of action-packed experiences for those wanting a more daring venture when staying in Conwy. Green Dragon Activities is ideal for people wanting to try out water sports such as stand-up paddle boarding, white water rafting, or kayaking. This company also offers land-based activities such as paintballing and archery, as well as a high ropes course. Try out sailing at Boom Sailing, where novices can be taught all the tips and tricks. For a more thrilling ride, try powerboating with North Wales Power and Sail.
National Beekeeping Wales is a fantastic insight into the world of beekeeping and is located on the edge of the River Conwy. There are beekeeping courses on offer for those wanting a hands-on experience in this fascinating attraction.
Conwy Water Gardens is home to some creatures you may not expect to find in Wales, those being capybaras. The site also looks after otters and a variety of species of fish, as well as tortoises. Be sure to have one of their now famous Dutch pancakes for lunch, where there are a range of savoury and sweet fillings to try out.
