PURBECK APARTMENT

A warm welcome awaits you at the wonderful Purbeck Apartment in Chideock, Dorset. The apartment was built purposefully with holiday makers needs at its heart, with its modern interior providing a contemporary loft-style feel.

Purbeck is a peninsula located in southern Dorset – also known as the ‘isle of Purbeck’ it encompasses a sixty square mile area of land that borders the English Channel. Though Purbeck isn’t technically an island, it is bordered on three sides by water, giving it the appearance of one. The peninsula encompasses beloved towns such as Swanage and Durdle Door, and with such a wide array of exciting places to visit, Purbeck should not be missed out on. Below are some of the best places to discover in the peninsula.

Hot Tub Holidays in Purbeck

Durdle Door

Perhaps the most iconic landmark in Dorset, Durdle Door is a stunning natural limestone arch located near Lulworth. The arch is imposing, standing almost 200 feet above sea level and is located on a pebble and shingle beach. Part of the Jurassic Coastline, Durdle Door is a fantastic place for photographs and is an extremely popular beauty spot amongst tourists.

To see the landmark in all its glory, take the cliff top steps up to a magnificent viewing spot. Though when walking, make sure to wear trainers or walking boots as the path can be treacherous.

Corfe Castle

When visiting the district of Purbeck, Corfe Castle is one of its greatest attractions. The castle is situated in a gap in the Purbeck hills and was originally built to defend the area from invading armies. Built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, Corfe Castle has an interesting history (to say the least!) It stands as one of the iconic reminders of the English Civil War, surviving an attack by the Parliamentarians in 1646.

Nowadays, the site of Corfu Castle is a popular destination for tourists, run by the National Trust. It offers sprawling views of the breathtaking Purbeck hills, as well as exciting activities for children – including a woodland activity trail through the grounds of the castle. There are also a variety of walks to take part in around the site, with trails to follow along Purbeck’s stunning coastline.

The Coast Restaurant

Offering some of the most spectacular views across Swanage Bay, the Coast Restaurant offers a unique and innovative menu. The restaurant only uses the freshest and locally sources ingredients to create modern British cuisine. The restaurant is best known for its famous breakfasts, winning the Visit England Best Breakfast award in 2024. Head here for a delightful meal surrounded by idyllic coastal scenery.

Swanage Railway

Take the train through the picturesque Purbeck countryside and be transported back in time with this spectacular steam train experience. A unique trip out for the family, the railway carries you to several exciting towns such as Swanage, Borden and Harmans Cross and stretches across ten miles of beautiful land. The Swanage line originally ran from the 1880s to the 1940s and was since rebuilt in 1976.

Swanage Railway
Swanage Railway

The attraction now contributes more than £15 million a year to the Isle of Purbeck economy and is one of the peninsula’s most popular tourist spots. Enid Blyton was a particular fan of the railway, having used it as inspiration for her Famous Five book series. The train even hosts afternoon tea on-board, so make sure to book for a special experience. Alternatively, attend one of their Curry Nights or the Friday Night Bistro for a unique evening with friends and family.

The peninsula of Purbeck encompasses some of Dorset’s most iconic landmarks, including Corfe Castle and Durdledoor – the views are spectacular, and the wildlife is vast and expansive. Make sure to take a trip on the unique Swanage Railway for an unforgettable experience and learn more about the infamous Corfu Castle by partaking in a guided tour. For a delicious bite to eat, try the award winning Coast Restaurant located in the Grand Hotel on the Swanage Coast.
