The market town of Newmarket, situated in the gorgeous Suffolk countryside, is a bustling place from which visitors can easily access some incredible surrounding locations. The town itself is home to some fantastic eateries and shops, so there is plenty to do both in and around this dynamic place.
Exploring the area
As a birthplace of horseracing, there are plenty of opportunities to discover this part of Newmarket’s history in town. Visit the family-friendly National Horse Racing Museum to learn all about the heritage of the sport through the archives and photo gallery. Interactive displays and resident horses make this a truly exciting outing. See more horses at The National Stud and learn about the workings of a thoroughbred stud farm.
Take a stroll through the High Street and discover the independent shops, all specialising in bespoke goods. There are also art galleries which display some incredible local talent. Be sure to visit the twice weekly market, hosted in the town centre. Discover hand-made crafts and local artisan food created by the residents of Newmarket.
A 10-minute drive away is Dojima Sake Brewery, in the rustic Fordham Abbey. Take a guided tour of the facilities and see the fascinating brewing process of sake. The Three Blackbirds is a 10-minute drive from town, and this historic-feeling pub is located in a 17th Century thatched building, creating a wonderfully cosy atmosphere. Their regularly changing menu celebrates local produce and is always guaranteed to be delicious.

Nancy’s Vintage Tea Shop is another great spot for an afternoon sweet treat, its quirky interior and antique furniture creating a bespoke experience for its guests. Nature
Unspoiled countryside surrounds Newmarket, with trails for both relaxed walks and longer hikes, open to visitors after 1pm. Walks through these heaths have stunning views of the town. Stour Valley Path is an alternative walk and is perfectly peaceful with vistas of the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Take a 20-minute drive to the vast Thetford Forest, comprised of nearly 19,000 hectares of gorgeous, lush forest. There are multiple different routes to discover this incredible natural spot, and more adventurous travellers can try out Go Ape at High Lodge. For a more sedate route amongst beautiful plants and flowers, stroll through Lynford Arboretum.
