Walking in Hawes
The Yorkshire Dales surrounding Hawes offer a wealth of spectacular waterfalls that provide a great end destination for hiking.
Hawdraw Force is a particular standout. It’s England’s largest single drop waterfall with a 100ft drop! Alternatively, the walk to Aysgill Force is a shorter route for jam-packed days. Cotter Force is notably accessible for wheelchairs and prams – perfect for all of the family.
If you’re looking for a longer walk, the famous Pennine Way crosses through the edge of Hawes. Take a leisurely stroll north through rolling fields then crest a gradual climb onto Yorkshire’s tempestuous, sweeping moorland. You’ll reach Great Shunner Fell, the third highest point in Yorkshire!
Or for an all-day walk, head south, following the Roman Cam High Road over spectacular scenery before approaching the ground-breaking 19th Century Ribblehead Viaduct.
Things to do around Hawes
Relive the stories of kings with a visit to Middleham Castle! Once the childhood home of Richard III, extensive parts of this ruined medieval castle still stand today, including a viewing platform that offers magnificent views of Wensleydale.
Middleham Castle is only half an hour from Hawes, making it the perfect spot for a half-day trip back in time. Chat to the well-informed staff, peruse some of the exhibitions or activities, or simply stroll the grounds and imagine Richard III walking in your footsteps eight hundred years ago.
Alternatively, there’s enough to keep you entertained in Hawes itself. Explore the marketplace, where you’ll find cute independent shops selling handmade gifts, second hand books, or traditional sweetshop sweets.
Then visit the Dales Countryside Museum, the museum for the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Understand the traditional occupations of the Dales, like shepherding, dairying, or building dry stone walls, and marvel at the ancient artefacts uncovered in the area, including a gold Viking ring.
Food & Drink
More cheese, Gromit? Make Wallace jealous and visit the Wensleydale Creamery to pick up this famous crumbly cheese unique to Yorkshire. The Creamery offers free tasting, a cheese-making demonstration tailored to families, and an extensive gift shop packed with cheeses and other accompaniments. Fun fact – just like only champagne made in the eponymous region of France can bear the name, only cheese made in this area can call itself Wensleydale!
If you’re not full from your cheese-testing, journey out one evening to the White Hart Inn in central Hawes. The building is a 16th Century coaching inn lovingly converted into an atmospheric restaurant. The cosy bar area features an open fire. . . but if a miracle occurs and Yorkshire is bathed in evening sun, enjoy a hearty local ale in the courtyard beer garden.
