No need to leave the pooch at home – with a great choice of pet friendly cottages, you can take the whole family away
More and more dog owners are discovering the joys of taking their four-legged friends on holiday with them. In fact, plenty of us have stayed at home for our holidays because we weren’t able to take our dogs with us!
While it used to be difficult to find cottages that allowed dogs, there’s now such a big choice of pet-friendly cottages in all parts of the UK that you simply don’t have to leave that one important family member behind. In many cases, your dog can stay with no extra charge.
There’s nothing quite like seeing your four-legged friend playing on a beach – and if it’s the sea he loves, you can find plenty of cottages on or near the coast. Northumberland, Yorkshire, Cornwall and Somerset are all counties with spectacular beaches and plenty of dog-friendly cottages to stay in.

Some beaches have restrictions on when dogs are allowed so it’s always worth checking before you book your stay. The local council website should have information about when restrictions apply and where you can find alternative walks.
The Lake District is renowned for its amazing walking trails and stunning scenery and the National Park is a perfect place for hiking and exploring – the dog will love it! The Yorkshire Dales also has some great places for walking – Oxenber Wood is beautiful in the spring with orchids, bluebells and other wild flowers and it’s not even a hard climb. As always, keep an eye out for livestock and make sure your dog is under control when he needs to be.
Scotland is a wonderful place for a UK break and Misty Isles Cottage, close to the lovely village of Ellenabeich and a short walk from the sea is delightful. As all dog owners know, an enclosed garden is really important – it gives you the freedom to let your dog stretch his legs before you take him out for a proper walk – and this lovely little cottage has a private hot tub and a sea view, as well as an enclosed garden and patio. There are plenty of great walks on Seil Island, which is connected to the mainland via the ‘bridge over the Atlantic’.
If it’s a Cornish bolthole you’re looking for, Tresooth Holiday Barns near Mawnan Smith are just three miles from Falmouth and close to a wealth of dog-friendly beaches. The cottages are set around a pretty courtyard with a shared hot tub and a large outdoor heated swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and games room. There’s a small path from the cottages which takes you to Argal reservoir and water park where you can take the dog for a good run.
