Why we love Margate – the cool, cultural seaside town
Whether you’re coming to Margate for the thrills of the UK’s oldest wooden roller coaster, or the beauty of the numerous art exhibitions and galleries within the town, Margate is a loveable, cool and cultural seaside spot. Perfect for your next staycation!
1. Days out perfect for art enthusiasts
The Turner Contemporary has been providing artists with a space to showcase their creative work since opening in 2011, whilst their shop sells the work of more local creators. Perhaps it’s no wonder that The Times described it as “the most elegant gallery interior in Britain right now.” With free entry to both the gallery and exhibitions, it’s great for those wanting a day out on a budget, whilst still taking in Margate’s culture.
Established in 1891, Lovelys Gallery is still owned and run by the Lovely Family in Margate. Exhibiting originals, limited edition and prints over its two floors, you can even buy art equipment from the Arts and Craft department store if you’re inspired by the work you see! Their range of artisan gifts also make for perfect reminders of your staycation.
2. Days out for the adventurous
For any thrill-seekers travelling with you, head over to Dreamland to get your kicks on restored vintage rides. From a ghost train originally built in the 1960s, to the theme-park classic big wheel, there’s something for everyone, even if you’re not a fan of high-speed thrills or scares! But for those travellers who prefer some thrills whilst keeping their feet on the ground, pay a visit to the Roller Room where you can skate your worries away. And when you need a break away from the adventure, take a look at the food and drink available at Dreamland; the seaside staple of fish and chips is on offer of course, or you can head to Cinque Ports to grab some Mexican street food!
If you prefer a creepier kind of adventure, join Murky Margate Tours and learn about the murders, suspicious deaths and skulduggery of the town. From the Murder at the Metropole to the unusual discover in the Parade cinema, you’re sure to learn about a much different side to Margate’s history.
Winner of the LogicEscapesMe Golden Key Award, The Escapement is a real-life adventure that you’ll need to utilise mental and physical abilities to escape from, so get all your friends and family together to head on over there! Fight against the Gods in Egyptian Exodus or even take a trip to the centre of the earth in The Pit. Or if you fancy yourself a pirate, their Pirates of Polaris room is sure to test your skills on the high seas.
3. Relaxing days out
Looking for more of a calmer day? Woodland View Alpacas is just a fifteen-minute drive away by car from Margate and offers the unique chance to take Alpacas trekking and walking. You can even stop off at the Watering Hole Café for a delicious cream tea after your trek!
Get some ocean air out at Margate Beach. Just a three-minute walk from Dreamland, it’s the perfect spot to take a quiet break away from the hustle and bustle. Pop a towel down on the sandy beach for a sunbathe or make the short walk into the Old Town to grab a picnic for the day.
But if your picnic on the beach doesn’t quite fill you up enough, then the Old Kent Market is the place to be! Spend the day getting lost whilst tasting the world from Margate.
