Out and about
As St Andrews is known as being the ‘Home of Golf’, there are plenty of courses to choose from for both beginners and seasoned pros wanting to practice whilst on holiday. The Old Course is the most famous course in the golfing world and situated at this five-star site is the gorgeous hotel and spa. An elegant afternoon tea or sophisticated evening meal can be enjoyed here whilst looking out onto the course. Golf enthusiasts can learn more about the history of the sport in this area in The R&A World Golf Museum, which features artefacts dating back to the 15th Century.
More of St Andrews’ heritage is visible from the various monuments around town. St Andrews’ Castle is located on the coast and inside you can explore the secret passages and dungeons constructed in the 13th Century. In town, learn more about the area’s history at the St Andrews Museum. This attraction can be found inside a stunning Victorian mansion and chronicles important events in the town’s history. Discover more in the St Andrews Heritage Museum, which has a cosy atmosphere created by its location in a cottage-style building. Wardlaw’s Museum overlooks the sea and has four galleries of fascinating exhibits.
East Sands beach is a great spot for sunbathing on a warm day and taking a dip in the sea to cool off. Rockpools are easily accessible from this beach, so kids can discover the shore creatures for themselves. Grab a takeaway lunch at The Cheesy Toasty Shack on the beach.
Dundee is only a half-an-hour drive away from town across the River Tay. This is a coastal city where the nautical heritage is on display at the V&A Museum, as well as being discoverable on the two historical boats, those being the HMS Unicorn and the RRS Discovery. Have an artisan-style lunch at Empire State Coffee, or the Old Mill Kitchen and Coffee Shop for a cosier environment.
