About South View Retreat

This collection of quirky two-to-four-person lodges are nestled among the rolling green hills of Great Busby, in the North Yorkshire countryside. With nature all around, and a truly bespoke glamping experience, this is the perfect place for a rural retreat for a couple or small family wanting a peaceful getaway in nature.

There are some fantastic naturally gorgeous locations nearby, making this site ideally located for people who want to explore the North Yorkshire coast. You will be greeted at the end of the day with a comfortable and stylish place to rest your head, before heading out again in the morning for another fun-filled day of adventure.

The site is surrounded by the unspoiled countryside, making this a wonderfully tranquil setting for an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There are plenty of routes to walk through the incredible woodland close to the site, which makes for a relaxing and escapist day out in nature.

For a more luxurious experience, the site offers spa and beauty treatments for guests. Have a proper pampering by booking a facial treatment, a manicure and pedicure, or a massage. This is the perfect way to indulge in the luxury on offer and feel completely de-stressed. Guests can also book a yoga session, which takes place outside, so the countryside views create the perfect idyllic backdrop for the ultimate relaxation.

The pods have been designed with both comfort and style in mind, and each pod has its own quirky and unique architectural design. The interior is framed with a picture-perfect view of the rolling green hills, and this in addition with the open plan living and kitchen area creates a generously spacious feel.

This allows guests to easily spread out and situate themselves for a longer stay. The furnishings are homely and cosy, meaning guests can easily relax and settle in. There is an en-suite shower in the pods, as well as a hot tub outside on the wooden decking. Guests can also sit at the picnic bench outside, which is a great place to soak in the sun on a hot day. Kildale, Leven, Ayton and Carlton lodges sleep two, which is ideal for a couple. The Roseberry sleeps four and is the perfect size for a small family.

Being situated in the North Yorkshire countryside means that there are some outstanding natural locations to discover. Near to the site is The Wainstones, a scenic point where there are a collection of stones and breath-taking views of the mountains and greenery all around. Scugdale is a national park and is a popular hiking route.

Other than this, adventurous travellers are spoilt for choice for places to walk and hike, with the North York Moors National Park being so close to the site. The seaside town of Whitby is just under an hour’s drive away, and this thriving spot is perfect for an all-day outing. Visit the Abbey which inspired the classic Dracula story and take a stroll along Whitby Beach. Curious visitors can learn more about the area at the local museum. For some retail therapy, the bigger town of Middlesborough is nearby.

South View Retreat Reviews

"Really enjoyed our stay"
Nick - Mar 2024
"Location of the lodge was fabulous close to towns such as Stokesley and Northallerton. Very quiet surroundings and good views.Lodge has the basics you would need utensils etc.Lodge was very clean.Bathroom had what you needed but very small, difficult to move freely in the shower.Hot tub was fabulous very easy to work and one of the best Ive been in. One of the downsides was staff almost being too attentive as a long distance couple it was time for us to be alone but felt often intruded at times."
Jessica - Mar 2024
"As we have been a few time to the Kildare, we knew what to pack. they provide a few essential items, but we just take everything we need. great size bed that is comfortable, good sized toilet and shower room and although there have clearly been some breakages of crockery since our last visit - they are down to one cereal bowl (there are pasta bowls though too) it was enough for the 2 of us."

Darren - Nov 2023
"We stayed at the Carlton lodge for the weekend Friday to Sunday and had a lovely time. The lodge was cost inside with a very comfortable bed. Although the sofa could do with an update and inside could do with re painting. I also would stress the importance of using air fresheners and plug ins as we thought it smelt a bit of dog. It was my boyfriends birthday so I spoke with John to arrange some decorations and these dont disappoint and so Thankyou for the help. The hot tubs are the best touch to the lodge and made the stay so much better for us. I do feel the welcome back could be better and more useful and also the information booklet could be updated with more recent menus. Thanks for a great stay"
Verified Guest - Nov 2023
"Great holiday stay here , everything was comfy , clean and tidy. The cooking facilities was basic but it was manageable so Id say take some extra bits . I loved the location ! It was quiet and peaceful and sitting in the hot tub looking at the hills whats not to love . Only thing I personally would like is a bin in the bathroom but again its not essentia."
Lauren - Nov 2023

Sofia - Nov 2023
"Very comfortable stay owners very friendly enjoyed our stay"
Simon - Nov 2023
"We recently stayed here with our dog and baby. John was extremely welcoming and made us laugh the minute we arrived and is a credit to the site! The lodge however, needs some work doing to it! We stayed in the wainwright and everything looked fine on first glance. However, the seal in the shower was black and mouldy. The sink was similar! The bottoms of all the furniture was chipped (understandable as it is a dog friendly cabin) but maybe not to the point it was!The hot tub looked fine again but when in it in a dark swimsuit, there was all bits of white skin stuck to us which was disgusting to the point we couldnt and wouldnt use it! The doors on the cabin didnt close properly and had a large gap above both which with the bad weather was cold and very loud meaning we left a day early due to having our baby with us! We made the best of the situation as we could however it was kind of overshadowed by the issues above! Again though John was a pleasure to deal with :)"
Paul - Nov 2023
"We could not recommend this place enough! Our stay was absolutely amazing and staff were so helpful and welcoming. 10/10 from us, will definitely be staying here again :)"
Tiegan - Jul 2022
"Beautiful well equipped hot tub lodge, perfect for romantic break."
Denise - Jul 2022
"The welcome by the owners was lovely as he showed us to the pod and how the hot tub worked. A lovely clean and well stocked pod. Hot tub was amazing. Local pub the Black Swan was very reasonably priced and great food. Day trips to Whitby, Robin Hood Bay and Scarborough were approx 1 hour away. Fab weekend."
Penny - Jul 2022
"Fantastic location really quiet, hot tub fantastic and pod just as good. Owners very helpful and attentive. The views were to die for."
Paul - Jul 2022
"Lovely pod in pretty location would definitely stay again"
Gillian - Jul 2022
"Great lodge, well equipped and amazing views! We hope to be back soon"
Megan - Jul 2022
"Peaceful site with lovely views."
Alison - Jun 2022
"Great place to stay staff where very helpful and kind, always around if you needed them."
Linzi - Jun 2022
"This was a first time glamping experience for me and my girlfriend and from start to finish it was amazing. The cleanliness upon arriving to the site and the pod was of top standard. The views you wake up to every morning was something you could never get bored of. The jacuzzi every night after a day of exploring or doing whatever you choose around the area was something you can't get enough of. The location of the site was perfect, not too far away from anything you may need like food and things to do yet it's far enough so it's peaceful and somewhere to escape the hectic lifestyle were used too back home. Everyday we was greeted by John who's the owners son and he was always at hand to make sure there were no problems. We enjoyed it that much that we are already looking at coming back next year. If you're thinking of coming here I wouldn't think too much about it and I'd get it all booked up. 5 stars all the way!"
Ben - Jun 2022
"We stayed here from Fri 17/6 to Mon 20/6. I deliberately chose the location as knew we would be visiting the Beamish museum in County Durham & also York, so it was pretty central. The accommodation was very clean & comfortable. The only problem we had was with the shower not draining away in the morning - it was OK in the evening, though. We flooded the bathroom on the first occasion! It was blissful sitting in the hot tub looking out at the beautiful scenery. This was the first holiday me & my husband had had without children (so for at least 18 years). We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Visited Redcar beach on the first evening & went home via the moors & stopped at Filey for lunch. Would recommend, but beware the shower!"
Nicola - Jun 2022
"A great base location for a break in the North York Moors. We had a warm and friendly welcome from our arrival, with much appreciated local tips and advice."
Liz - Jun 2022
"Very helpful staff, very tidy park, pods are amazing.Great views, lovely place to go"

Big Sheep - EX39 5AP

This is a recommended day out for families with young children visiting the Bedale area of Yorkshire.  Visit the farm and receive a warm welcome as well as a guided tour.  You will have the chance to bottle feed the lambs, bath a pig and handle some of the smaller animals.  Kids will love the big sandpit and the outdoor play area. There is also a cafe and indoor play area for when the weather is not on your side.
Flamingo Land - YO60 7EW

Situated in Malton in North Yorkshire this has to be one of our favourite family days out.  It's a theme park and zoo all in one stretching over a massive 400 acres. With thrilling rides for the very daring like Cliff Hanger, Corkscrew and Kumali, there are also more gentle rides for the little ones such as Frog Hopper and Helitoys.  Family fun attractions include the 4D cinema, the lost river ride and the Little Monsters Den of Mischief. Check out their website for seasonal events which take place throughout the year and you can also gain more information about the zoo.  Flamingo Land is a resort as well as a theme park so you can also book accommodation there.

The 60 acre site is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and is an excellent choice for a day trip. Lightwater Valley - HG4 3HT

Situated in the Ripon area of North Yorkshire this popular theme park makes a fantastic day out for the whole family.  The more daring will love the big and thrilling rides such as Raptor Attack, The Ultimate and Trauma Tower.  For the little ones there are some excellent attractions such as Flying Camels, Dodgems and a Magic Wheel.  Toddlers will like the Dragon Boats and the Lightwater Express amongst other things. There are over 40 rides and attractions in total and we think this is excellent value for money too.  If you book your tickets in advance online you can save even more money and beat the queues.
Castle Howard - YO60 7DA
about 25 Miles
Castle Howard is one of the regions most beautiful and historic landmarks and is located in 1,000 acres of parkland with breathtaking gardens to explore. As well as exploring the castle visitors can enjoy attractios including the unique Land Train - the best way to see the entire park. There is also a large lake offering boat trips during the summer months. In high season the site is very popular with families and offers organised activities for children including tours, talks, crafting and animal encounters. The site also has a Nature Trail which is fun for the whole family and an Adventure Playground where children can run off some energy.

This is an outstanding world heritage site located close to Ripon in the North Yorkshire area. Nature lovers will be in their element with an abundance of wide open spaces to explore and there are special guided tours for families.  Some of the highlights may include seeing wild deer and bats during your visit.  The grounds are fantastic to wander round but there is also an Elizabethan Mansion, Victorian Church, Georgian Water Garden and the finest example of Cistercian Abbey ruins in the country - Well worth a visit!
The Grainary Wildlife Farm - YO25 3HS

Located in Harwood Dale Village, North Yorkshire we think this attraction makes a superb family day out and couples will also enjoy the nature walks in the area.  There are 6 nature walks in total surrounding the farm so walkers and lovers of the outdoors will be in their element. Some of our favourite walks include the Spring Flowers, Pond and Village walk which takes around 35 minutes, and the Meadow and Trees walk which takes one hour.
Web Adventure Park - YO32 9JS

Come rain or shine children need to be entertained and Creepy Crawlies just north of York is the perfect place! There is also a pond with fish and a sensory zone where children can touch and feel new and interesting things.
Betton Farm Visitor Centre - TF9 3PS
about 32 Miles
Betton Farm Visitor Centre is the ideal attraction close to the North Yorkshire coastal town of Scarborough. This animal farm has all the cute farm animals you would expect to see and will appeal to younger children especially.  A great place to both play and learn we think the Betton Farm Visitor centre is great value for money.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs.  Some of the highlights of the day might include meeting Sofie the Shetland Pony and Henry the goat, as well as the pot bellied pigs called Porky and Hammy.
