When is the best time to visit?

Peak tourist season in the Lake District National Park falls over the summer holidays between July and September. However, visiting during off-peak months can offer great weather with fewer tourists. Some attractions may close between November and February so make sure to check the opening times of any you have your heart set on when you plan to visit.

Taking your dog

If the idea of going on a UK break and leaving the pooch at home sends a shiver down your spine, the good news is that the Lake District is a very pet-friendly destination. You've got a wide choice of accommodations that allow dogs and restaurants, pubs and attractions that welcome visitors with 4 legs as warmly as the rest of us.

According to a survey, around 42% of us take our dogs to the Lakes each year and enjoy some of the UK's best-loved walking routes.

Thanks to the outdoorsy nature of the Lake District, there are a multitude of pet-friendly pubs and restaurants with at least 15 just in the Windermere area! Similarly, many attractions are dog friendly including the Ullswater Steamers, Lowther Castle and Gardens and the Keswick Launch.

You can enjoy over 3100 miles of walking trails for walkers of all levels. Whether you're a serious hiker or more of an amble-to-the-next-pub kind of explorer. Catbells walk is a very popular 4-mile circular walk I've done personally and it's a real feast for your eyes. gorgeous scenery and lots of wide open space. Head back to your lodge at the end of the day to soothe your muscles in the hot tub.

Many of the lodges in the lakes are pet friendly too. Flusco Wood are just one resort to offer pet-friendly lodges with hot tubs, and incredible views of the Lake District to go alongside.

Quick tips to a hot tubbing break with your pet: The lakes is known for it's wildlife and of course the sheep who make it their home. It's important to keep your dog under control and abide by the Countryside Code when it comes to pets.

The Lake District for Couples

The charm of the Lake District lends itself to an ideal romantic getaway. Booking a lodge gives you a home away from home and a property with a hot tub is a great activity you can share together. According to VisitEngland, the Lakes is actually the most popular honey moon destination in the UK, with 17% of couples heading there to spend quality time together.

Couples are spoilt for choice for activities to do when on a lodge break in this area. Take a rowing boat out on Derwent Water, or visit Dove Cottage – the home of Wordsworth! Head to Lake Windermere and enjoy relaxing around this gorgoeous part of the Lakes. Or hire a paddleboard and head out onto the water. (Don't worry, wet suits are provided!)

If you're up for a challenge, another popular activity for couples is to hike up Helvellyn - one of the highest peaks in the District. It's a bit of a climb, but the romantic views from the top - wow!

Dining out in Lakeland is also a real highlight if you're taking a break with your significant other, with a choice of traditional rustic restaurants, up to high-end Michelin-starred L'Enclume in Cartmel and the Gilpin Hotel & Lake House, which has an impressive three AA Rosette restaurant. Or just order a takeaway to your lodge and see what's on TV!

Surrounded by the tranquillity of nature is the perfect setting to relax with your partner in the hot tub and spend some real quality time together.

For an extra special day out, why not book a hot air balloon tour and admire the beauty of the Lakes from the sky? Calthwaite Hall Lodges is an ideal location for a couples retreat as they are romantically situated on the grounds of the historic Calthwaite Hall.

Quick tips for booking a hot tub break for couples: Pick somewhere quiet where there's lots of space to get away from it all. There are some adults-only lodges if you're looking for a really quiet break. There are lots of glamping breaks in the Lake District too, which also have hot tubs, so you don't have to miss out.

Top 5 attractions and days out in the Lakes

There are so many awesome things to see and do on a lodge stay in this area, it's not an easy task picking a handful of them. Here are some of the main ones we'd recommend whether you're taking a short break or a longer holiday.

1) Lake Windermere

The largest natural lake in England and arguably the most popular area of the Lake District. The scenery here is just breathtaking and there are loads to do on and around the lake for all ages and tastes from boat trips and watersports to scenic walks and cycling routes.

Taking to the water is definitely something you should try out during your lodge break in the Lakes. And you don't have to get wet. There are some brilliant boar trips that will take you on a tour of the lake and its many islands. Or hire a rowboat, kayak, or motorboat.

There are activity centres dotted around the lake where you can hire equipment and enjoy the watersports. Book in advance so you don't have to wait around or risk missing your slot.

The nearby towns of Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere are just a joy to visit and explore and you'll find a huge range of quaint shops and a wide choice of restaurants and cafes. Take a souvenir or two back from your holiday.

Lake District FAQs

A few helpful tips and tricks for getting the most out of your hot tub break in the lakes.

Will my hot tub be cleaned for my arrival?

Yes! Your hot tub will be emptied, cleaned and refilled ready for your arrival. Most of the time it will be hot by the time you reach your lodge as owners know that people like to get straight in there. It's worth finding out whether you can use the hot tub on checkout day and what time it will be emptied.

Are there accessible outdoor activities for those with no previous experience?

Yes! There are many accessible trails for those looking to get into hiking. Dodd wood and Mirehouse near Keswick have a range of trails. Bassenthwaite Lakeside Lodges offer stylish lodges with hot tubs just a short distance away. Aira Force Waterfall Walk is also a popular choice for novice hikers.

Will I need to pack food for my stay?

How much food to pack will depend greatly on where you stay and how often you intend to eat at pubs and restaurants. Many lodges, such as those at Fallbarrow, have access to an onsite shop, off licence and restaurant. There will be small shops in each town and village so food can be bought in the area if needed.

How long should I stay in the Lake District for?

Whether you stay for 2 nights or 2 weeks there is ample to do in the Lake District. However, a longer stay allows you to explore more of this incredible area, and spend more time in the hot tub!
