Top family days out for your Northumberland holiday

The world-famous Hadrian’s Wall is a must-see when in Northumberland - this ancient stretch of wall, build by Roman Emporer Hadrian was built to keep out the barbarians. Today it's still an impressive structure that spans the width of the country.

If you are a lover of gardens and grand homes then Alnwick Garden is one of the finest contemporary gardens in the UK.  It's a great stop for a family day out and they have lots of interesting events on throughout the year. Like the awesome Titan robot.

Other equally stunning gardens can be found at Howick Gardens. And if you've never been to Craigside Estate, you're in for a real treat. Plan to spend a day here - there's lots to do here for all ages and plenty to learn too. The huge mansion is well worth a visit too.

Northumberland FAQs

First-time hot tub break in Northumberland? Here are some quick tips to help things go more smoothly!

Where can I park my car?

Most lodges offer off-road parking right next to your lodge which makes unloading the goods quick work.

Do I need to pack absolutely everything?

Packing a car for a few nights, or a week can be a daunting task, especially if you're going away with a baby or younger kids. Thankfully Northumberland has plenty of shops where you can pick up anything you forget.

Most lodges will have a well-equipped kitchen that includes a fridge, freezer, oven, hob and microwave but they won't normally have things like salt and pepper and cooking oil.

If you're travelling a distance and are worried about food spoiling, leave the fresh stuff. Not everyone likes to call at the supermarket once they arrive on holiday and prefer to hit the hot tub, but if you don't mind shopping when you arrive, it can save you from having to pack food.

Will I get a welcome pack?

Depending on the lodge you might get some basics such as milk and tea and coffee and some biscuits. Some lodge parks will have a small shop where you can buy local meats and produce along with some basics you might need.

Is Northumberland a good place to visit with kids?

While children might love the hot tub, it's good to know whether there's more to see and do if you're taking the children on a lodge break. Northumberland is packed with places you can take your family.

You'll definitely want to visit some of the National Trust locations throughout the area (which have some incredible playparks!) Wallington Hall and Cragside Hall make for a really memorable day out and there's enough there to merit a full day.

Will my hot tub be cleaned before we arrive?

When you book a lodge, the hot tub will be drained and refilled prior to your arrival. In the majority of lodges, this will happen directly after the previous check out which gives the hot tub plenty of time to heat up to around 38 degrees for your arrival.

Is Northumberland a good place to visit 'off-season'?

Like anywhere, this county is fantastic to visit in the sunny months wearing T-shirts and sitting out on the grass but it's equally as good to come at any time of the year. We've holidayed in Northumberland in the rain, sun and even heavy snow and there's still lots open and plenty to see and do in the Winter months.
