Upton Lakes Lodges Reviews

"Honestly, I dont even know where to start. This place was a total nightmare. The decking was rotten and collapsed under me, which was terrifying - especially since Im pregnant and at 34 weeks, that couldve been disastrous. The hot tub was ice cold and broken and the safety railings were all damaged. The kitchen appliances were filthy and clearly hadnt been cleaned in ages. We tried contacting site maintenance, but they were no help at all. We called Hoseasons and the site many times with no response and even emailed a formal complaint thats gone unanswered. Honestly, I wouldnt recommend this dump to anyone. Their customer service is non-existent and the place is just a health hazard."
Sam - Feb 2025
"When we arrived, there was no email or text beforehand telling us where to pick up the keys, which was a bit frustrating. Had to ask a guy who claimed to be the site manager and he said no one had turned up to give us the code for the lock, so we were pretty much left in the dark. Once inside, the place was pretty dirty - spent half an hour hoovering the floors and found random things like a dummy, a board game and a child's book lying around, which was odd. We thought wed relax with a cuppa, but when we turned on the TV, it was stuck on Babe Station - not exactly what we expected! Tried to get some mugs out of the cupboard but they were covered in stains, so we had to wash them before use. The tea towel we found was also stained, which was a bit grim. Checking the plates, glasses and cutlery was disappointing - all dirty and in a poor state. The access roads to the lodge are terrible; lots of deep potholes from the main entrance all the way to the property, which made the drive quite unpleasant. On the bright side, the lodge's location is lovely - peaceful, quiet and private. There are plenty of shops, takeaways and restaurants nearby, so no shortage of options. The back decking area was cluttered with dirty ashtrays filled with cigarette butts, which was a bit gross. Overall, we were pretty disappointed and left early on the morning of departure. Honestly, we wouldnt recommend it and probably wouldnt go back - such a shame really!"
Jamie - Jan 2025
"Really happy with it"
James - Nov 2024
"We had a pretty good stay overall. The lodge really does feel like a home away from home and the owners have done a lovely job with the fixtures and furniture, making it look inviting. The large decking area was a highlight-great chairs, a big table, BBQ and a sunken hot tub, which was lovely to relax in. That said, a bit more attention to detail during cleaning wouldnt hurt; we noticed some dust and touch points that couldve been wiped down better. The BBQ was left quite dirty and mouldy, which was a bit disappointing. Also, only half of the hot tub jets worked and on our last day, they stopped altogether. We know the site management is aware and trying to fix it, but if you're planning on daily hot tub use, it might be a let-down. Still, overall, a nice place to stay!"
Jamie - Nov 2024
"Our Upton Lakes Lodges review: We loved the modern vibe and comfy feel, though the beds were a bit firmer than our own at home. Overall, a really nice lodge!"
Emma - Oct 2024
"Great cabin overall, but towels could be refreshed if you're there longer than three nights."
Alex - Oct 2024
"Beautiful lodge, well-equipped and perfect for our stay."
Emma Carter - Sep 2024
"We had a good stay at lodge 4. The hottub was a real highlight and it had everything we needed. Its true it could use a bit of sprucing up, but for the price during the August bank holiday, its pretty decent. Perfect spot for fishing and exploring nearby areas, really good value!"
Luke - Aug 2024
"We spent four lovely nights at Upton Lakes with our two kids and it was just perfect. The lodge was spacious, spotless and had some sweet little details that made it special. The kitchen had everything we needed and the views of the lake from the lounge and bedrooms were truly stunning. Everyone loved the hot tub - such a treat! We caught loads of fish, mainly perch and carp, which kept the kids entertained. Theres plenty of shops nearby for essentials and lots of lovely beaches and towns within half an hours drive. Well definitely be back!"
Emma - Aug 2024
"Honestly, we were pretty disappointed with this place. First off, there was no running water on our second day and the morning we left, which is just not acceptable. The listing said there would be a starter pack of logs, but when we asked, the manager said thered be a charge-pretty frustrating. The BBQ was empty when we arrived and we had to ask for gas to use it, which was annoying. No dressing gowns either, so we had to use towels for the hot tub - bit of a letdown. The sofa bed was broken when we got there and we were given a foam fold-up instead, which wasnt comfy at all. Overall, not what we expected and safety-wise, it felt a bit off without water. Definitely not worth the price we paid, sadly."
Emma Carter - Aug 2024
"We recently stayed for four nights and honestly, the lodge was a bit dated, definitely in need of some sprucing up. It was clean enough and didnt have any bad smells, so that was a relief. The location isnt ideal if you dont have a car since theres not much nearby - youll need to drive to find things to do. The internet was pretty patchy too, which was a bit annoying. The hot tub was quite small and showing its age, not the best experience. Things took a turn on our last night when the water turned brown and then stopped altogether. We told the site manager, who was polite but couldnt really help or figure out what was wrong. It meant no showers the next morning, as the pressure was terrible. Overall, the first few days were okay, but weve stayed at nicer places. If youre after somewhere off-grid, its okay, but dont expect luxury!"
Amelia - Aug 2024
"We had a lovely, peaceful break. The lodge felt so cosy and homely; wed definitely come back again!"
Emma Clarke - Aug 2024
"We had an amazing 4-night escape, really loved how peaceful and simple everything was. The hot tub was such a treat, perfect for unwinding. The location is ideal for exploring nearby spots like Exeter, Wookey Hole and Darlingtons glass factory - all worth a visit! The limited Wi-Fi was actually quite nice, gave us a proper break from screens. Definitely coming back!"
Sam Carter - Jul 2024
"Weve been coming back to this lodge three times now because it really is lovely. The privacy is great and its super easy to get to the lake for a stroll. The only issues are the poor WiFi and spotty TV reception, which isnt a big deal for us. A quick tip - bring an electric fan for the summer nights as it can get quite warm and a sharp knife for preparing food. The staff are fantastic and always ready to help."
Emma - Jul 2024
"The place had everything we needed, though the exterior could do with some sprucing up. Overall, quite comfy!"
Emma - Jul 2024
"Absolutely loved it, can't wait to come back soon!"
Emma - Jun 2024
"Really enjoyed our stay, the lodge was spotless and modern too."
Emma - Jun 2024
"The lodge was beautifully renovated, really stylish and comfy. We loved the secure outdoor space, perfect for our little one and the dog to enjoy safely. Highly recommended!"
Emma Carter - Jun 2024
"Honestly, we felt the lodge had seen better days. Its clear its been around for a while and could do with some serious TLC. The exterior paint was peeling and it looked pretty tired from the outside. Inside wasnt much better - there was a constant unpleasant smell, even after we tried air fresheners and the place couldve been cleaner, with dust on the skirting boards and mould in the bathrooms. Wi-Fi was pretty much useless too, which was a bit of a pain. We probably wouldnt come back, sadly. Shame because the location is nice, but it needs a lot of work."
Jane Thompson - Jun 2024
"We stayed in Lodge 10 and honestly, it felt really cosy and welcoming. The place was spotless and the new sofas plus the Ninja kitchen gadgets made it feel modern. The hot tub was spotless too and the BBQ on the deck offered gorgeous views. We're already booking for next year - love it here!"
James - Jun 2024
"Really disappointed, would not recommend ever."
James - Jun 2024
"We recently stayed at Upton Lakes and honestly, it was a really lovely break. The lodges had everything we needed and the setting was absolutely breathtaking. Its not luxury, but for the price, you cant really complain. The outdoor furniture was a bit dated, but it didnt ruin the experience-sitting outside with a glass of wine, listening to the birds and watching families of birds with their chicks was just perfect. We booked two lodges-one for us and one for family-and both were quite different but equally nice. The familys lodge had a sauna, though none of us used it, so cant really say much about that. WiFi was pretty limited, but we werent surprised since its in a rural area and we did get sporadic internet which was a bonus. Theres a village nearby with all you could need, including takeaways and a big Tesco for supplies. Overall, we had a relaxing holiday and would definitely come back. The staff were really friendly too!"
Sophie - Jun 2024
"We recently stayed at Upton Lakes and honestly, it was a pretty relaxing break. The lodges had everything we needed and the setting is absolutely stunning-really peaceful and perfect for unwinding. The outdoor furniture isnt the newest, but it was more than enough to sit outside with a glass of wine and listen to the birds singing, which was lovely. We had two lodges-one for us and another for family, both quite different but nice in their own ways. The familys lodge had a sauna, though we didnt end up using it. WiFi was quite limited, but thats to be expected in such a rural spot and we managed to get some internet now and then, which was a bonus. The nearby village has all you could need-takeaways, a big Tesco, fuel, you name it. Overall, we all enjoyed our stay, it was a really chilled holiday and wed definitely come back. The staff were super friendly too!"
Alex - Jun 2024
"We had quite the experience here. The road to the lodges is pretty rough, so beware if youre driving a low car! It was a bit confusing since theres no sign from the main road, so we ended up circling a few times before finally finding it. The welcome email never arrived, so we had no idea what to do upon arrival, but thankfully a lovely lady who looks after the site was really helpful. The lodge itself felt a bit tired and could use a refresh, especially the bathrooms. The area is peaceful, perfect if you want quiet, but dont expect WiFi or good mobile signal. Perfect for us, wed come back!"
Emily Carter - May 2024
"We had a lovely stay here! Cullumpton really is welcoming to dogs, which is great. The walks nearby are perfect for our furry friends and its nice to see everyone responsibly picking up after their pets. The lodges felt private and cosy and we enjoyed watching the wildlife around the lakes. Definitely coming back!"
Alex - Apr 2024
"Really enjoyed our stay at Upton Lodges, the hot tub and sauna were fantastic! Can't wait to come back."
Emily Carter - Apr 2024
"Overall, the cabin was really nice inside and we loved the vibe. Just a tiny thing - the decking needed a wash, lots of bird mess. Would stay again!"
Sam - Apr 2024
"The lodge looked really worn out, honestly. It definitely needs some cash invested to match the description."
Emma - Mar 2024
"Really enjoyed our first stay, it was such a lovely experience!"
Emma Carter - Feb 2024
"We arrived on Sunday afternoon after a 6 hour drive but there was no one about rang the number provided and was seen to within minuets . In the lodge and sorted within 10 minuets and having a well deserved cup of tea . The Lodge was very comfortable as I am larger than most reading a review about the beds I thought the worst but as I say everything nice and comfortable and easy to use . The only thing is there is no WIFI and the phone signal is poor but that can be a big bonus"
John - Jul 2022
"Amazing holiday second time we have been and loved it! Great accommodation, lovely location, spotlessly clean and lovely maintenance staff"
Jennifer - Jul 2022
"Needs a bit of work to tidy up abit loose handrails, hot tub lid broken in two light bulbs not working."
Steven - Jul 2022
"We had the best time! Peace and quiet. Staff could not have been more helpful. Wonderful wildlife around the lodge including ducks, geese and peacocks. We were in lodge 5, this lodge allows dogs in. It was spotless! Everything you could possibly need was in the lodge. The hot tub was amazing and so restful. We will be returning next year. I highly recommend this location."
Nicola - Jul 2022
"Didn’t see any staff, but we didn’t actually need too. Lodge had everything that we needed so we had a nice stay. Was ideal for the wedding we attended at Upton barn and walled garden."
Christine - Jun 2022
"Had a fantastic weekend away So peaceful and lovely lodge Great place if you want to relax with the town close by My dog loved exploring the area And the fishing lakes are fantastic Enjoyed it so much have booked again for November"
Clare - Jun 2022
"Stayed in lakeside escape the lodge was spotlessly clean and had everything you need for a nice relaxing holiday. Mark the on site caretaker was very helpful and approachable. Great holiday was had and will rebook."
Mark - Jun 2022
"Very peaceful. Nice lodge could do with a facelift but not the end of the world. Didnt use the hot tub. It looked grubby. Enjoyed the fishing. Could do with a bit of fishery management and some more info on the fishing. The folder was quite informative but again could do with updating. At the end of the folder it ask us to leave a comment in the book. Where ? Did not meet any staff hence the score on helpfulness. All said and done would recommend."
